C’est à Mascouche, dans sa résidence, que la mannequin Rachel C. de Next Canada me reçoit chez elle. M’accueillant en ce qui ne peut qu’être plus confortable et intime : pantoufles aux pieds, thés chauds sur la table et ambiance tamisée, nous somme loin de la vie glamourous que nous sommes habitués d’imaginer des mannequins. Pourtant, ces jeunes femmes et jeunes hommes sont à la fois monsieur et madame tout-le-monde tout en ayant ce travail qui les passionne et qui, du moins, est peu ordinaire. Aujourd'hui, la mannequin nous en apprend un peu plus sur son travail. _____________________________________________________________________________
It's in Mascouche, a Montréal suburb, that I met a Next Canada's model: Rachel C. Welcoming me with some tea and a nice kind of warm atmosphere, we are way far from the glamorous life of top models we are use to imagine. Yet, these young women and men are living an amazing life because of their job, but they have to live the "everyday life" of ordinary people. Here's a close up into a top model life.
1. Axelle Dubé: Depuis quand fais-tu ce métier? | Since when have you been working as a model?
Rachel C.: Depuis maintenant 2 ans et demi. | Since 2 years and a half.
2. A.D.: La semaine passée tu m'as dit que tu devais aller à New-York. Est-ce que ton métier t'ammène à voyager régulièrement à l'étranger? | Last week, you told me you were about to leave to New-York. Do you have to travel often since you're a model?
R.C.: Mon premier voyage a été en République pour Clin d'Œil. Ensuite, j'ai été à Toronto, Paris et New-York. La République et Toronto c'était des voyages qui étaient payés, mais New-York et Paris ont été des voyages à mes frais. Comme Montréal est une petite ville et qu'en tant que mannequin on a vite fait le tour des compagnies, magazines et etc, on n'a pas trop le choix d'aller ailleurs si on veut aller plus loin dans le métier. Mon agent m'a donc fait connaître et j'ai été faire des castings et je travaille donc pour deux autres agences: Major Paris et Wilhelmina, New-York.|My first trip for my job was for the Clin d'Œil magazine and I went to Dominican Republic. Then I went to Toronto, Paris and New-York. Toronto and the Dominican Republic were "paid trips", but I had to pay to go to Paris and New-York. As you know, Montréal is a small city and as a model there is not as much companies, magazines to work with as in Noew-York or Paris. So if I wanted to go further I had to go somewhere else. My agent made me go to New-York and Paris and I am now working with two other agencies: Major Paris and Wilhelmina in New-York.
3. A.D. Et qu'est-ce qui fait que certains de tes voyages ont été à tes frais et d'autres non?| Why Dominican Republic and Toronto were "paid trips" and New-York and Paris not?
R.C.: En fait, c'est que Paris et New-York ont été des voyages pour "me faire connaître", j'allais là-bas pour trouver des agences, faire des castings, tandis que Toronto et la République c'était des contrats. Alors, oui c'est un risque à prendre, payer de ta poche parce que tu ne sais pas si tu va en ressortir gagnant. En plus de cela, je voulais que ma mère m'accompagne durant ces deux voyages et mon copain est aussi venu me rejoindre à Paris. Je n'aurais pas pu si j'avais accepté ce que mon agence m'offrait, c'est-à-dire vivre dans un petit appartement de mannequins.| Well, what is making the difference is that New-York and Paris were like an "investment trip", I went there to go to castings and to find new agencies. It is actually a risk to take, but I'd never got anywhere if I stayed here in Montreal. Plus, I wanted my mother to come with me in both of those trips and my boyfriend also joined me in Paris. I couldn't have been with them if I had stayed in an apartment from the agency with other models.
4. A.D.: Est-ce que ton travail empiète beaucoup sur ta vie personnelle? Dois-tu faire des compromis avec tes études, ta vie familiale? | Is your job taking a lot of your time? Is it hard to deal with school, your personnal life and modelling?
R.C.: Quand j'étais au secondaire, je manquais beaucoup d'école. Présentement, au CEGEP, je suis seulement à une journée par semaine.
Je suis seulement mes cours de base, français, philosophie, etc. Je continue d'aller à l'école seulement pour garder le rythme parce que, je me connais, et si j'abandonnais je n'y retournerais sûrement pas. Présentement, c'est une période morte pour moi parce que c'est la saison des fashion week et comme je ne défile pas, je m'occupe! J'aime bien cuisiner haha! Sauf que lorsque je travaille beaucoup c'est difficile de concilier mon travail et l'école, voilà pourquoi j'y vais seulement une journée par semaine. Les agents ne veulent pas que tu abandonne, mais il veulent aussi que tu travaille, c'est un peu touché! La plupart recommandent de faire l'école à distance, mais ce n'est pas si simple, ça demande beaucoup d'organisation.|I had to skip a lot of classes when I was in high school, and now, in CEGEP, I go to school only one day per week. I have only the basic stuff: french, philosophy and etc. I don't know why I'm still going to school! I think I go just to keep going because if I stop, I wouldn't return. Now, it's the "dead season" for me, because it's the fashion shows, and I'm not doing this, so I try to keep me busy by cooking haha! But, when I'm very busy beacause of my job, it's hard to deal with school and modelling, so that's why I chose to go to school only one day. Agents don't want you to stop school, but they also want you to continue to work with them, so it's difficult to make all this work.
5. A.D.: Il existe un préjugé que les mannequins sont toutes anorexiques. Bien sûr, il n'est pas vrai, mais est-ce que ton travail te contraint beaucoup sur le plan alimentaire? Est-ce que ça te dérange? | There's this stereotype that all the models are anorexic. Of course, this is not true, but does your job force you to pay attention to what you eat?
Premièrement, ce préjugé est clairement faux, peut-être qu'il était vrai avant, mais aujourd'hui ce n'est plus le cas, en tout cas pas ici à Montréal. Les filles à Montréal ne sont pas anorexiques pour la grande majorité. Ici, on m'a déjà refusée parce qu'ils me trouvaient trop mince, tandis qu'à Paris, je me faisais regarder parce que j'étais "grosse" comparée aux mannequins parisiens. La pression d'être toujours plus mince ne vient pas nécessairement du milieu, mais beaucoup plus de la compétition entre les filles. Ça dépend beaucoup de la ville où tu te trouve. Cependant, pour la grande majorité des mannequins, toute ville confondue, on a cet avantage d'être "minces naturellement". On est ces personnes qui mangent à peu près ce qu'elles veulent sans trop grossir. Pour ce qui est des contraintes, oui je fais attention, mais je ne "prive" pas. C'est-à-dire qu'à quelque part, il faut que je fasse attention parce que mon travail me le demande. C'est une sorte d'initiative, car si je me laisse aller, je n'aurai plus de travail. | Well, first of all, the majority of the models aren't anorexic, not here in Montreal though. Maybe this stereotype existed a few years ago, but now, it isn't true. Especially here in Montreal, this prejudice does not apply to the models. Once, they refused to work with me because I was considered as too skinny. While in Paris, I was considered as "big" compared to the other Parisian models. The pressure does not come from the industry, but much more from the competition between the girls. So, it also depends on the city where you have to work. However, for the vast majority of the models, from any city, we have this advantage of being skinny without any effort. We're those girls who can eat almost anything without enlarging. But, yes, I have to pay a bit attention to what I'm eating, because, if not, I will have no job.

6. A.D.: Décris-moi un peu l'ambiance générale sur un plateau lors d'un shooting? Comment ça marche lorsque tu arrive sur place? | Tell me a little bit about how it works during a shooting? How is it when you arrive?
Tout d'abord, c'est mon agent qui se charge de me trouver des contrats. Si ça marche et que c'est à Montréal, quand j'arrive sur place je connais habituellement toujours une personne ou deux sur le plateau vu que le marché à Montréal est assez restreint, donc c'est toujours réconfortant, si on peut dire, de savoir qu'on est pas seule haha. Ensuite, c'est le maquillage, les cheveux, quelques essais photos avec des explications de "l'attitude" que je dois avoir durant le shooting. | Firstly, my agent has to find me contracts. Then, if I'll be working in Montreal, when I arrive, I usually look for someone I might know. The fashion industry in Montreal is small, so everybody knows each other, and it's always great when I know a person or two that I'll be working with. After comes the hair and makeup and some pics just to check some things and to know what attitude I have to chose for the shooting.
7. A.D.: Quels sont tes plans pour le futur? Le prends-tu au jour le jour? | What do you expect from this job?
Heumm, bonne question haha! Je n'en ai tout simplement aucune idée, pour l'instant c'est très "au jour le jour" je dirais. Je n'ai pas de plans, je prend ce qui vient, mais je sais que si j'avais à laisser mon copain, ma famille, ou mes amis, derrière moi pour travailler ailleurs je ne le ferai sûrement pas. J'ai ce côté très "zone de confort". Si j'ai à aller plus loin dans ce métier j'opterais probablement pour New-York, qui est beaucoup plus proche. Pour l'instant, je n'ai pas de plans. Cependant, je verrai ce que l'avenir me réserve. | Hummh, that's a pretty good question haha! Actually, I don't have any plans, I have no idea what I'm going to do. However, I know that if I have to go live in Europe for exemple, and leave my family, my boyfriend and my friends, I won't go. My job wouldn't pass before them, I would prefer my "comfort zone" haha. But if I have the chance to go further with this job I would probably choose New-York, because it's way more near to Mascouche. For now, I don't have any plans, I'll just take what comes to me!
